Facial fat grafting

Restoring facial volume with the patient's own fat.

In facial fat grafting, fat taken from areas such as the abdomen or thighs is processed and transferred to areas that have lost volume, such as the cheeks, temples, under the eyes or the chin. Part of the transferred fat may be resorbed by the body.

How is it performed?

A small amount of fat is harvested with fine cannulas from an area such as the abdomen, flanks or thighs. The fat is processed and purified, then placed in small amounts, layer by layer, into areas of the face that have lost volume using very fine cannulas. Part of the transferred fat may be absorbed by the body during the first months.

Who is it suitable for?

  • People with loss of facial volume
  • Those with enough fat available for harvesting
  • Those whose general health is suitable for surgery

Consultation and preparation

  • At the first consultation, your expectations, medical history and current medications are discussed in detail.
  • Blood tests and any other necessary examinations are carried out before surgery, and an anaesthetist's assessment is obtained.
  • Blood thinners, certain herbal products and supplements may need to be stopped for a period beforehand on the physician's advice.
  • Smoking impairs wound healing; a break of at least several weeks before and after surgery is recommended.
  • Fasting times and your arrival time at the hospital are given to you in advance.

Recovery

Facial swelling and bruising usually last 1–2 weeks. The lasting result becomes clear over a few months once resorption has settled.

Aftercare advice

  • Take the prescribed medication and follow the dressing instructions as advised.
  • Short walks in the early period support circulation; avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise until your physician approves.
  • If recommended, wear the garment, bandage or compression clothing for the specified period.
  • Protect the incision areas from direct sunlight during the first months.
  • Attend your follow-up appointments regularly; contact us without delay if you develop fever, increasing pain, redness or discharge.

Possible risks and complications

  • Partial resorption of the transferred fat
  • Contour irregularities
  • Asymmetry
  • Infection
  • Vascular occlusion (rare)

Frequently asked questions

Is facial fat grafting permanent?

Fat cells that take hold remain as living tissue, but part of the transferred fat may be absorbed and the face continues to age. An additional session can be planned if needed.

How does it differ from filler?

The patient's own tissue is used and larger areas can be treated; on the other hand, it is a surgical procedure and the donor area also needs to heal.

Where is the surgery performed?

Operations are performed in licensed hospitals in Istanbul, primarily Liv Hospital Topkapı, with an anaesthetist present.

I am travelling from abroad. How long should I stay in Istanbul?

This depends on the type of surgery and your recovery. After the preliminary assessment, the recommended length of stay is given to you in writing.
