Reconstruction

Wound Closure Surgery

Closing open wounds from pressure sores, trauma surgery and tumour removal.

For wounds that cannot close on their own, direct closure, skin grafts or tissue flaps moved from nearby or distant sites are used. The method is chosen according to the wound's location, depth and the patient's general condition.

How is it performed?

First, the wound is cleaned of dead tissue and infection is brought under control; negative pressure wound therapy is used if needed. Once the wound is ready, it is closed according to its size and location by direct closure, a skin graft (thin skin taken from another part of the body) or tissue flaps moved from nearby or distant areas.

Who is it suitable for?

  • People with pressure sores or chronic non-healing wounds
  • Those with tissue loss after trauma or tumour surgery

Consultation and preparation

  • At the first consultation, your expectations, medical history and current medications are discussed in detail.
  • Blood tests and any other necessary examinations are carried out before surgery, and an anaesthetist's assessment is obtained.
  • Blood thinners, certain herbal products and supplements may need to be stopped for a period beforehand on the physician's advice.
  • Smoking impairs wound healing; a break of at least several weeks before and after surgery is recommended.
  • Fasting times and your arrival time at the hospital are given to you in advance.

Recovery

Recovery depends on the size of the wound and the method used. Regular dressings and check-ups are required.

Aftercare advice

  • Take the prescribed medication and follow the dressing instructions as advised.
  • Short walks in the early period support circulation; avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise until your physician approves.
  • If recommended, wear the garment, bandage or compression clothing for the specified period.
  • Protect the incision areas from direct sunlight during the first months.
  • Attend your follow-up appointments regularly; contact us without delay if you develop fever, increasing pain, redness or discharge.

Possible risks and complications

  • Infection
  • Flap loss
  • Graft failure
  • Wound healing problems
  • Scarring

Frequently asked questions

Why do pressure sores need surgery?

Deep pressure sores struggle to heal on their own. Surgery removes dead tissue and covers the wound with well-perfused tissue to support healing.

How many stages does treatment take?

Depending on the wound, it may be completed in a single session or in several sessions with separate cleaning and closure stages.

Where is the surgery performed?

Operations are performed in licensed hospitals in Istanbul, primarily Liv Hospital Topkapı, with an anaesthetist present.

I am travelling from abroad. How long should I stay in Istanbul?

This depends on the type of surgery and your recovery. After the preliminary assessment, the recommended length of stay is given to you in writing.
