Masseter botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin injections into the chewing muscle.

Masseter botulinum toxin is injected into the chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw. It can be used for symptoms of teeth clenching and grinding, and for jaw width caused by muscle bulk.

How is it performed?

The position and thickness of the masseter, the chewing muscle, are assessed at the consultation. Botulinum toxin is injected into specific points of the muscle on both sides. As the muscle's overactivity decreases, the aim is to ease clenching complaints and change prominent muscle bulk in the lower face.

Who is it suitable for?

  • People who clench or grind their teeth
  • Those with prominent chewing muscles
  • Those who are not pregnant or breastfeeding

Consultation and preparation

  • An examination takes place before treatment, and your expectations, medical history and any previous treatments are discussed.
  • Blood thinners, aspirin or certain supplements can increase the risk of bruising; please be sure to mention them.
  • Treatment may be postponed if there is active acne, a cold sore or infection in the area.
  • It is advisable to schedule treatment a few weeks before an important event rather than in the days just before.

Recovery

Daily life can be resumed immediately. The effect becomes noticeable within a few weeks.

Aftercare advice

  • Do not massage or press on the treated area on the first day.
  • Avoid intense exercise, saunas, steam baths and excessive heat for the first 24–48 hours.
  • Cold compresses can be used for mild swelling or bruising.
  • If you notice increasing pain, blanching or discolouration in the treated area, contact us without delay.

Possible risks and complications

  • Bruising and swelling at the injection site
  • Temporary chewing weakness
  • Temporary effects from spread to neighbouring muscles
  • Asymmetry
