Umbilical hernia repair

Surgical repair of a hernia at the navel.

An umbilical hernia is a protrusion of internal tissue through a weakness in the abdominal wall at the navel. In the repair, the hernia sac is returned and the abdominal wall is reinforced with stitches and, if necessary, mesh. It can be done in the same session as an abdominoplasty.

How is it performed?

Through a small incision at the edge of the belly button, the hernia sac is located and its contents are returned to the abdomen. The opening in the abdominal wall is closed with stitches; if it is large, a mesh may be used for reinforcement. When planned together with a tummy tuck, the repair can be done through the same incision.

Who is it suitable for?

  • People with a hernia causing a bulge or pain at the navel
  • Those whose general health is suitable for surgery

Consultation and preparation

  • At the first consultation, your expectations, medical history and current medications are discussed in detail.
  • Blood tests and any other necessary examinations are carried out before surgery, and an anaesthetist's assessment is obtained.
  • Blood thinners, certain herbal products and supplements may need to be stopped for a period beforehand on the physician's advice.
  • Smoking impairs wound healing; a break of at least several weeks before and after surgery is recommended.
  • Fasting times and your arrival time at the hospital are given to you in advance.

Recovery

Heavy lifting is avoided for a few weeks. Return to daily activities is usually possible fairly quickly.

Aftercare advice

  • Take the prescribed medication and follow the dressing instructions as advised.
  • Short walks in the early period support circulation; avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise until your physician approves.
  • If recommended, wear the garment, bandage or compression clothing for the specified period.
  • Protect the incision areas from direct sunlight during the first months.
  • Attend your follow-up appointments regularly; contact us without delay if you develop fever, increasing pain, redness or discharge.

Possible risks and complications

  • Infection
  • Seroma
  • Hernia recurrence
  • Bleeding and haematoma

Frequently asked questions

What happens if an umbilical hernia is not repaired?

The hernia can enlarge over time and rarely lead to emergencies such as bowel entrapment. Sudden pain, hardness or a change in colour require immediate medical attention.

Will the belly button look different?

During the repair, care is taken to preserve or improve the shape of the belly button.

Where is the surgery performed?

Operations are performed in licensed hospitals in Istanbul, primarily Liv Hospital Topkapı, with an anaesthetist present.

I am travelling from abroad. How long should I stay in Istanbul?

This depends on the type of surgery and your recovery. After the preliminary assessment, the recommended length of stay is given to you in writing.
