How is it performed?
In addition to the horizontal incision of a conventional tummy tuck, a vertical incision is made in the midline of the abdomen. This allows excess skin to be removed both from top to bottom and from the sides towards the centre. The abdominal muscles are repaired and the belly button is reshaped.
Who is it suitable for?
- People with extensive excess skin after major weight loss
- People with a stable weight
- Non-smokers or those able to stop smoking
Consultation and preparation
- At the first consultation, your expectations, medical history and current medications are discussed in detail.
- Blood tests and any other necessary examinations are carried out before surgery, and an anaesthetist's assessment is obtained.
- Blood thinners, certain herbal products and supplements may need to be stopped for a period beforehand on the physician's advice.
- Smoking impairs wound healing; a break of at least several weeks before and after surgery is recommended.
- Fasting times and your arrival time at the hospital are given to you in advance.
Recovery
A compression garment is usually worn for several weeks. Scars fade over time; return to strenuous activity is planned on the physician's advice.
