Hand Surgery

Tendon, nerve and vessel repair after trauma, carpal tunnel surgery, De Quervain tenosynovitis surgery, radial and ulnar tunnel surgery, tendon transfers.

Hand surgery includes microsurgical repair of tendons, nerves and vessels cut in injuries, release of nerve compressions (carpal, radial and ulnar tunnel), treatment of tendon sheath conditions such as De Quervain tenosynovitis, and tendon transfers for loss of function.

How is it performed?

The method depends on the problem. In injuries, severed tendons, nerves and vessels are repaired using microsurgical techniques. In carpal tunnel and radial or ulnar tunnel syndromes, the ligament compressing the nerve is released; in De Quervain's tenosynovitis, the sheath through which the tendon runs is loosened. In tendon transfers, a healthy tendon is rerouted to take over the function of one that has been lost.

Who is it suitable for?

  • People with cuts or injuries to the hand or wrist
  • Those with numbness, tingling or weakness in the hand
  • Those with wrist pain and tendon sheath inflammation

Consultation and preparation

  • At the first consultation, your expectations, medical history and current medications are discussed in detail.
  • Blood tests and any other necessary examinations are carried out before surgery, and an anaesthetist's assessment is obtained.
  • Blood thinners, certain herbal products and supplements may need to be stopped for a period beforehand on the physician's advice.
  • Smoking impairs wound healing; a break of at least several weeks before and after surgery is recommended.
  • Fasting times and your arrival time at the hospital are given to you in advance.

Recovery

Splinting and hand therapy (physiotherapy) are an important part of recovery. The duration depends on the type of repair.

Aftercare advice

  • Take the prescribed medication and follow the dressing instructions as advised.
  • Short walks in the early period support circulation; avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise until your physician approves.
  • If recommended, wear the garment, bandage or compression clothing for the specified period.
  • Protect the incision areas from direct sunlight during the first months.
  • Attend your follow-up appointments regularly; contact us without delay if you develop fever, increasing pain, redness or discharge.

Possible risks and complications

  • Infection
  • Restricted movement
  • Temporary or permanent changes in sensation
  • Tendon adhesion or rupture
  • Scarring

Frequently asked questions

Is physiotherapy needed after hand surgery?

Hand therapy is an important part of recovery, especially after tendon and nerve repairs. The exercise programme and its duration depend on the procedure.

How long does carpal tunnel surgery take?

It usually takes about 15–30 minutes under local anaesthesia, with discharge on the same day.

Where is the surgery performed?

Operations are performed in licensed hospitals in Istanbul, primarily Liv Hospital Topkapı, with an anaesthetist present.

I am travelling from abroad. How long should I stay in Istanbul?

This depends on the type of surgery and your recovery. After the preliminary assessment, the recommended length of stay is given to you in writing.
