Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty

Removal of excess abdominal skin and fat, with repair of the abdominal muscles.

Abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat after pregnancy or weight changes and, where needed, repairs the abdominal muscles.

How is it performed?

The incision is usually made above the pubic area so that it lies within the underwear or bikini line. The abdominal skin is separated around the navel and pulled down, and excess skin and fat are removed. Abdominal muscles separated by pregnancy or weight changes are brought together in the midline with stitches, and the belly button is reshaped in its new position. In 270° and 360° procedures, the incision extends towards the flanks and back to contour the whole circumference of the torso.

Who is it suitable for?

  • People with a stable weight
  • Those with abdominal laxity after pregnancy
  • Non-smokers or those able to stop smoking

Consultation and preparation

  • At the first consultation, your expectations, medical history and current medications are discussed in detail.
  • Blood tests and any other necessary examinations are carried out before surgery, and an anaesthetist's assessment is obtained.
  • Blood thinners, certain herbal products and supplements may need to be stopped for a period beforehand on the physician's advice.
  • Smoking impairs wound healing; a break of at least several weeks before and after surgery is recommended.
  • Fasting times and your arrival time at the hospital are given to you in advance.

Recovery

A compression garment is usually worn for several weeks. Return to strenuous activity is planned on the physician's advice.

Aftercare advice

  • Take the prescribed medication and follow the dressing instructions as advised.
  • Short walks in the early period support circulation; avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise until your physician approves.
  • If recommended, wear the garment, bandage or compression clothing for the specified period.
  • Protect the incision areas from direct sunlight during the first months.
  • Attend your follow-up appointments regularly; contact us without delay if you develop fever, increasing pain, redness or discharge.

Possible risks and complications

  • Bleeding and seroma
  • Infection
  • Wound healing problems
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Scarring

Frequently asked questions

Is pregnancy possible after a tummy tuck?

It is possible, but pregnancy can stretch the abdominal wall again. People planning a future pregnancy are therefore usually advised to postpone surgery.

How long is the compression garment worn?

It is usually recommended for 4–6 weeks; the exact duration is decided at follow-up visits.

Where is the surgery performed?

Operations are performed in licensed hospitals in Istanbul, primarily Liv Hospital Topkapı, with an anaesthetist present.

I am travelling from abroad. How long should I stay in Istanbul?

This depends on the type of surgery and your recovery. After the preliminary assessment, the recommended length of stay is given to you in writing.
